The potential for Kosovo’s membership in NATO was a key topic during a hearing in the U.S. Congress on Wednesday. Republican Congressman Keith Self emphasized that this is a primary goal for the Republic of Kosovo, while also highlighting that several NATO members still do not recognize its independence.
In this context, retired Admiral Mark Montgomery suggested that the United States should leverage its significant influence to encourage countries like Spain to change their stance of non-recognition, as reported by Klan Kosova.
Spain, along with Greece, Romania, and Slovakia, are the four non-recognizing states among NATO’s 32 member countries.
Toby Vogel from the Brussels-based Democratization Policy Council explains that these four countries have internal reasons that are preventing them from moving towards recognition. The U.S. strategy would likely focus on addressing these specific internal concerns to pave the way for Spain’s recognition of Kosovo.
