The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Kosovo has decided to suspend the political party Alliance for a New Kosovo (AKR) due to its failure to hold its party congress within the legally mandated deadlines.
According to Law No. 08/L-228 on General Elections, a registered political party must hold a party congress within six months of registration and then at least every 48 months thereafter. AKR, registered in 2007, was required to hold its next congress by February 25, 2026, but failed to do so.
The CEC emphasized that despite notifications from the Office for Registration, Certification, and Financial Control of Political Subjects on February 4 and 24, 2026, AKR did not take the necessary actions to comply with this legal obligation.
As a result, the party now has a 45-day extension to hold its congress. If it fails to do so within this period, the CEC warns that it will deregister AKR from the official registry of political parties in Kosovo.
