Mark Rutte said on Sunday he is “absolutely confident” that NATO will be able to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking to Fox News, Rutte addressed sharp criticism directed at the alliance by Donald Trump.

Rutte argued that the sensitive nature of the military operation required NATO countries to take time to carefully calibrate their response.

“Allies and European partners across the world have used the past two weeks to ensure we come together. They are beginning to plan and assess what we can do collectively as allies and as partners of the United States,” he said.

He also described the U.S. operation as “essential” due to what he called an “existential threat” posed by Iran.
