Cybersecurity expert Halil Berisha has warned of an organized operation involving suspicious and fake profiles which, according to him, are aimed at inciting violence and division in Kosovo.
Berisha said the activity of these profiles has intensified as the verdict of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague approaches, raising concerns over the spread of disinformation and dangerous calls for action, RKS News reports.
According to him, the methods used by these profiles resemble tactics previously employed by Russian intelligence in influence operations and efforts to fuel divisions, including cases in the United States.
“Recently, this hybrid cyber warfare has become increasingly present and is coordinated through ‘troll farms,’ which have often been proven to originate in Russia and countries allied with it, such as Serbia,” Berisha wrote.
He said that an analysis of these profiles had identified patterns of behavior that, in his view, are similar to those used by Russian intelligence in influence and destabilization campaigns.
“These profiles systematically spread disinformation in a coordinated manner and primarily post and comment on media outlets and the accounts of influential individuals,” he emphasized.
Berisha urged citizens to exercise caution and avoid falling victim to calls and disinformation that may be disseminated through these profiles. He also called on Kosovo’s institutions to take these activities into consideration.
