Kosovo’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Sveçla, has announced major reforms aimed at simplifying the process of reacquiring citizenship for members of the diaspora.
According to Sveçla, once the draft law is fully approved, citizens who previously renounced Kosovo citizenship will be able to regain it through a significantly streamlined procedure — free of charge and requiring only a single document.
The proposed changes drastically reduce bureaucratic barriers, cutting the number of required documents from nine to just one formal request, accompanied by proof that the applicant has no criminal convictions in their country of residence. Additionally, the processing time for applications will be shortened from six months to just 30 days.
Sveçla described the initiative as a crucial step toward strengthening ties between Kosovo and its diaspora, enhancing legal certainty, and ensuring that no citizen feels disconnected from their homeland.
