Following agreements with Google, SpaceX, and OpenAI, the U.S. Department of Defense has announced it has also signed agreements with Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, and Reflection AI. These agreements allow the deployment of their technologies and AI models on classified networks for “authorized operational use.”
In its official statement, the United States Department of Defense said the agreements aim to accelerate the transformation of the U.S. military into an AI-enabled fighting force, while strengthening decision-making capabilities for troops in the field.
“These agreements accelerate the transformation toward establishing the United States military as an AI-powered fighting force and will enhance our warfighters’ ability to maintain decision superiority across all domains of warfare,” the statement said.
The Department of Defense also clarified that the AI tools and models from these companies will be deployed in Impact Level 6 (IL6) and Impact Level 7 (IL7) environments—high-security classifications designed for data and systems critical to national security.
According to the announcement, these systems will help improve data synthesis, enhance situational awareness, and support decision-making processes for military personnel.
IL6 and IL7 are described as high-level security classifications for information systems considered vital to national security, requiring physical protection, strict access controls, and continuous auditing.
