Acting President Albulena Haxhiu paid tribute today to National Hero Agron Rrahmani, marking the 28th anniversary of his heroic fall in the struggle for Kosovo’s liberation.
In a commemorative message, Haxhiu highlighted Rrahmani’s lifelong dedication to the national cause, tracing his journey from a high school activist in Besiana (Podujeva) to a key figure in the underground resistance across Pristina, Tirana, and Tetovo.
A Legacy of Organization and Action
Haxhiu described Rrahmani as a man of relentless daily action, undertaking the vital “invisible” work necessary for a successful liberation movement. This included organization, logistics, and fostering a deep sense of trust among those fighting for Kosovo’s freedom.
“Agron was a brave warrior, but more than that, he was a master of urban military organization,” Haxhiu noted.
Key Military Contributions
Before his final command, Rrahmani played a pivotal role in the LKÇK (National Movement for the Liberation of Kosovo), where he:
- Led the combat training of volunteers.
- Helped establish a strategic training center in Tirana, where over 300 volunteers were prepared for the front lines.
- Was appointed Commander of the first illegal combat unit in Pristina, the “Rexhep Mala” unit, in February 1998.
A Week of Great Loss
Agron Rrahmani fell heroically on May 12, 1998. His death capped a tragic week for the liberation struggle, following the falls of fellow insurgents Bahri Fazliu on May 7 and Ilir Konushevci on May 9.
Haxhiu concluded her tribute by calling this period one of the “heaviest blows” to the early organization of the liberation war, while pledging that the bravery of Rrahmani and his comrades would be honored with eternal glory.
