Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has aggressively pushed back against anti-development demonstrations in Tirana, releasing footage of a protester making violent threats against billionaire George Soros. Rama vowed that the $1.4 billion luxury resort project will proceed according to his government’s explicit democratic mandate.

Prime Minister Edi Rama has doubled down on his government’s coastal development strategy following a third consecutive night of mass protests outside the Prime Minister’s Office.

The protests, which initially began over environmental concerns regarding the Zvërnec luxury resort project linked to Jared Kushner, have significantly escalated. Taking to social media on Wednesday morning, Rama shared a video snippet from the rally to argue that the movement has been hijacked by radical elements and has lost all legitimate environmental grounding.

The video highlighted a speaker at the podium delivering a xenophobic, conspiracy-laden diatribe, threatening violence against local authorities and explicitly targeting billionaire philanthropist George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, with profanity-laced ultimatums.

Rama Points to Overwhelming Electoral Mandate

In his public response, Rama dismissed the demonstrators’ demands for his immediate resignation and a halt to construction. He emphasized that his administration is legally and democratically bound to fulfill the economic program approved by voters.

“Good morning,” Rama wrote. “And with an apology for this unusual video postcard from the ‘Albania of Albanians,’ I assure everyone that Albania will be built according to the contract we signed for the fourth time last May with over 800,000 Albanians here and around the world.”

The Prime Minister fiercely criticized the rhetoric used at the rallies, stating:

  • Rejection of Radical Rhetoric: He accused opposition figures of using “blind patriotism” as a stage to curse imaginary enemies and historical traitors.
  • Irrelevant Grievances: Rama claimed that the protests have completely drifted away from their original environmental scope, devolving into political theater.
  • Economic Determination: He reiterated his stance that the multi-billion-dollar Mediterranean tourism expansion remains a core pillar of Albania’s future economic growth.

Protester Directs Ultimatums and Slurs at the Soros Family

The footage shared by the Prime Minister captured a volatile speech delivered to the crowd gathered in the capital. The unidentified demonstrator demanded Rama’s immediate removal from power within a 24-hour window, invoking religious language before pivoting to aggressive threats against international figures.

“There is no more tolerance. Zero tolerance against the Satanists! Death to the Satanists and Soros!” the speaker shouted from the podium, before launching into explicit English-language threats directed personally at Alex Soros and the wider Soros family network.

The Catalyst: Security Clashes at Narta Lagoon

Despite the government’s efforts to frame the protests around the radical rhetoric of specific individuals, grassroots anger remains high.

Public indignation originally boiled over following a violent incident at the construction site in Vlorë, where verified footage showed private security contractors hired by the development firm physically assaulting and dragging an environmental activist who was documenting the destruction of sand dunes.

Local citizens and a coalition of environmental NGOs maintain that the massive project violates protected status laws governing the delicate Narta Lagoon ecosystem, warning that the construction of thousands of hotel villas will cause irreversible damage to the habitat of migratory pelicans and flamingos.
