Fearing mass protests, drone incursions, and transnational security threats, Bern authorizes a massive auxiliary military deployment to shield Geneva and surrounding border cantons as global leaders descend on the region.

The Swiss Armed Forces announced a massive domestic mobilization on Thursday, confirming the deployment of approximately 4,000 troops to harden security vectors along the French border.

The emergency defensive posture comes as world leaders prepare to gather for the upcoming Group of Seven (G7) Summit, scheduled to take place from June 15 to June 17, 2026. The summit is being hosted in the French resort town of Evian-les-Bains, situated directly on the southern shore of Lake Geneva—positioning the high-profile event just miles from Swiss territory.

The high-stakes summit is set to bring together heads of state from the world’s leading economies, including U.S. President Donald Trump, alongside dozens of heavily guarded international delegations.

A Tri-Canton Security Challenge

Because Evian-les-Bains directly faces Switzerland across the water, Swiss military planners warned that the geographic proximity creates an unprecedented tactical challenge for local civil authorities. Intelligence agencies are already tracking plans for large-scale, potentially disruptive anti-globalization protests and activist counter-summits across the region.

“The extreme proximity to our border poses a major logistical and security challenge for law enforcement in the cantons of Vaud, Geneva, and Valais,” the Swiss Military Defense Group stated in an official communique. “Consequently, the Federal Council and Parliament have authorized an auxiliary security deployment of the armed forces to assist civil authorities.”

Airspace Restrictions and CBRN Defense

The mobilization extends far beyond ground troops. The Swiss Air Force is scheduled to initiate an aggressive, round-the-clock aerial patrol regime, enforcing strict, mandatory airspace restrictions across western Switzerland from June 10 to June 19.

To counter modern asymmetrical threats, the Swiss military confirmed that its specialized divisions will deploy state-of-the-art, electronic anti-drone defense systems to prevent unauthorized unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from entering the summit’s perimeter.

Furthermore, elite military units trained in CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) defense will be stationed at strategic hubs around Lake Geneva to counter any potential non-conventional weapons threats. Swiss officials emphasized that these proactive measures are designed to ensure that the international gathering proceeds without incident, maintaining total stability on both sides of the frontier.
