The United States is reportedly considering imposing new sanctions on Milorad Dodik, leader of the SNSD, over statements and actions that Washington believes could undermine stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo stated that it continues to monitor the behavior of political actors in the country and retains the right to impose punitive measures on individuals contributing to rising tensions and destabilization.

American diplomats recalled that Dodik and other officials from the Republika Srpska were previously under U.S. sanctions due to activities considered destabilizing. According to the embassy, these measures were lifted in October 2025 after Republika Srpska authorities took concrete steps to reduce tensions and repeal laws deemed unconstitutional.

However, in recent months Dodik has revived rhetoric about the potential secession of Republika Srpska from Bosnia and Herzegovina, once again raising questions about the country’s institutional stability.

Political observers note that Dodik has repeatedly referred to independence or secession throughout his political career, particularly during periods of political crisis.

Analysts also suggest that such rhetoric tends to intensify when Dodik faces political challenges. The former Republika Srpska president and his SNSD party are approaching new elections, while he is currently barred from running for public office due to previous court decisions.
