Speaking in an exhaustive interview with Radio Free Europe (RFE/RL) just one day after being violently beaten in downtown Belgrade, prominent Serbian author and activist Vladimir Arsenijević warned that Serbian society is trapped in a downward spiral of systematic, state-sponsored violence.

Arsenijević, the founder of the Krokodil cultural association, was assaulted on July 11, 2026—the 31st anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide—at the exact location where he was organizing a peaceful memorial event.

The Socialization of Hatred Among Serbian Youth

Reflecting on the ambush beneath Branko’s Bridge, Arsenijević expressed profound alarm not just at the physical violence, but at the generational radicalization of his attackers. He noted that the group consisted entirely of very young men, effectively teenagers, aligned with far-right groups like “451” and the “People’s Patrol” (Patrulla Popullore).

“To be empathetic toward the suffering of others, to extend a hand of reconciliation, to build any kind of relationship, is perceived here as treason, anti-patriotism, and something deeply anti-Serbian. I saw that hatred in the eyes of those young men… It is a hatred implanted in our younger generations, which they learn within the education system, through the media, and what is served to them at the Sunday family dinner table.”Vladimir Arsenijević, Author and Activist

Injuries, Death Threats, and Scepticism Over Justice

Arsenijević detailed the physical and psychological toll of the assault, confirming that the attack extended far beyond a physical scuffle:

  • Physical Injuries: He sustained significant facial swelling, broken temporary dental prosthetics, and severe bruising across his stomach and back from targeted blows.
  • Death Threats: The assailants openly threatened his life, warning him that he was “at the top of their list” and needed to watch where he walked.
  • Vandalism: The attackers thoroughly defaced Krokodil’s social spaces and restored nationalist graffiti across Belgrade, including the controversial English slogan: “The only genocide in the Balkans was against Serbs.”

While Arsenijević commended the on-site police officers and investigators for their highly professional conduct and correctness while taking his statement, he expressed near-total certainty that the case will be quietly shelved. He attributed this bottleneck entirely to a pervasive lack of political will from top state authorities to prosecute far-right street proxies.

Criticism of Vučić’s “Cynical” Rhetoric

The author leveled sharp criticism against Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić’s official public statement regarding the July 11 anniversary, in which Vučić claimed that Serbia “deeply bows before the Bosniak victims.”

Arsenijević dismissed the president’s rhetoric as profoundly cynical, pointing out that Vučić immediately neutralized the sentiment by adding the caveat “unlike others.” According to the activist, the state’s ongoing refusal to look historical facts in the eye keeps Serbia locked in a toxic loop of permanent historical self-victimization.

Arsenijević concluded that the continuous ideological alignment of the state with the wartime Milosević-era narratives makes it incredibly dangerous for independent thinkers to operate. However, despite the physical intimidation, he affirmed that Krokodil and its network of progressive citizens will continue to remove hate speech from Belgrade’s walls and push for regional historical accountability.
