Despite months of anti-government protests, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has made clear that he has no intention of stepping away from power. Instead, he announced plans to return to the office of Prime Minister following Serbia’s upcoming parliamentary elections, expected to be held by the end of this year.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Vučić said he intends to return to the position he held between 2014 and 2017, signaling his intention to remain at the center of Serbia’s political leadership after the conclusion of his presidential term.

He announced that parliamentary elections will be held by early December, to be followed by presidential elections.

“The parliamentary elections will be completed by early December. There is no room for any other decision,” Vučić stated.

The Serbian president described the country’s opposition as disorganized and unprepared for the upcoming elections.

Commenting on the European Union’s enlargement process, Vučić criticized the bloc’s current approach and reiterated his vision of a region without internal borders.

“What do you want for the region? Do you want to build stronger borders between our countries? If everyone moved forward together, there would be no borders between Pristina and Belgrade, or between any of us. We need a united region. We do not need a zone of conflict between countries entering the EU and those remaining outside the Union,” he said.

Vučić’s remarks come amid continuing political tensions in Serbia, where widespread protests have challenged his government while raising concerns over democratic governance and the country’s future political direction.
