Member of the Albanian Alliance in the Parliament of Montenegro, Ilir Çapuni, has reacted to the statement by Serbian Minister Snežana Paunović, who said in an interview that if she had been in the position of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milošević in 1998, she would have carried out the ethnic cleansing of Kosovo.

“As an Albanian politician in Montenegro, I am deeply concerned by Minister Snežana Paunović’s statement that she would have carried out the ethnic cleansing of Kosovo. Even more concerning is the fact that, instead of a clear condemnation, she was defended by Serbia’s Deputy Prime Minister Ivica Dačić, who attempted to justify and relativize such a statement,” Çapuni said.

In his reaction, Çapuni stressed that no injustice committed against any people can ever serve as a justification for calling for or defending the ethnic cleansing of another people.

“Such statements confirm more than anything why Kosovo’s independence was a historic necessity, but also why they rightfully cause concern among all minority communities in Serbia,” he said.

According to Çapuni, Europe cannot have a future based on the policies and rhetoric of the 1990s.

“Europe has no future with the policies of the 1990s. It is time to unequivocally reject such rhetoric, not to justify or relativize it,” the Albanian Alliance MP concluded.
