Kosovo’s Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) has announced it is ready to immediately resume negotiations with the Vetëvendosje (LVV) movement on forming the country’s new institutions after party leader Lumir Abdixhiku survived an internal confidence vote.
Coalition talks between the two parties had been suspended while the LDK held an extraordinary party assembly, convened following an initiative seeking Abdixhiku’s dismissal as party leader.
Speaking after the assembly, Abdixhiku confirmed that the suspension of negotiations had been lifted and that the LDK was once again open to discussions with Vetëvendosje on establishing Kosovo’s new governing institutions.
“From this moment, we are ending the suspension and reopening discussions on the formation of the country’s institutions,” Abdixhiku said following the vote.
He also revealed that during his initial meeting with Vetëvendosje leader Albin Kurti, the two sides discussed the issue of the “balance of powers.” According to Abdixhiku, the concept means that no single political party should control all of Kosovo’s key state institutions.
However, he denied reports that any broader political agreements had been reached during the talks.
The announcement signals a renewed effort to break Kosovo’s political deadlock after weeks of uncertainty over government formation, with negotiations between the country’s two largest political forces expected to continue in the coming days.
