Kosovo’s Acting President Albulena Haxhiu has criticized the Kosovo Judicial Council (KGJK) for failing to terminate the employment contracts of Serbian judges, describing the decision as “very bad news” and urging the institution to act in line with its legal responsibilities.
Speaking on the issue, Haxhiu contrasted the Judicial Council’s approach with that of the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council (KPK), which had previously taken steps regarding Serbian prosecutors.
“It is very bad news that the Judicial Council did not act in the same way as the Prosecutorial Council and in accordance with its legal responsibilities,” Haxhiu said.
She revealed that she had formally written to the chair of the Kosovo Judicial Council, informing him about a report she said she possesses concerning the integrity of Serbian judges serving within Kosovo’s judicial system.
According to Haxhiu, she also invited the head of the council to a meeting to discuss the matter but has not yet received a response.
“I sent a letter to the chair of the Judicial Council, informing him about the report I have regarding the integrity of the Serbian judges. I have not received a reply to that letter. I informed him about several issues and told him that I expect him to meet with me,” she stated.
Haxhiu called on the Judicial Council to act without further delay.
“I expect the Judicial Council to fulfill its responsibilities as soon as possible,” she added.
Her remarks come amid continued institutional scrutiny of judicial officials following the withdrawal of Serbian representatives from Kosovo’s institutions and ongoing efforts by authorities to address issues related to accountability and the functioning of the justice system.
