European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has welcomed the reported agreement on the disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza, describing it as a “constructive step toward peace.”
Kallas said that implementing the plan could pave the way for ending the conflict and stabilizing the situation across the region.
According to the reported proposal, Hamas’ weapons and those of other armed groups would be removed from use and placed under an internationally supervised mechanism. The process would be accompanied by a ceasefire and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
However, significant disagreements remain. Israel insists on the complete disarmament of Hamas before moving forward, while the Palestinian group argues that disarmament must be linked to Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza and the end of military operations.
The European Union has stated that it is prepared to play a role in implementing the plan and supporting efforts to stabilize Gaza in the post-conflict period.
