Germany’s Foreign Ministry said Monday that US President Donald Trump’s latest plan for Gaza could provide an opportunity to make progress toward the disarmament of Hamas, while acknowledging that significant disagreements and unanswered questions remain.
A spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry said Berlin viewed the plan as a potential pathway toward advancing efforts to disarm Hamas.
The comments came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly rejected the proposed US peace plan, raising questions about whether the initiative can gain the support needed from the parties involved.
Asked about Netanyahu’s position during a regular press briefing, the German official said disagreements should be expected given the complexity of the proposal.
“With such a complex undertaking, it is completely clear that there will be many, many unanswered questions,” the spokesperson said.
Germany’s position comes as the Trump administration seeks to advance a broader framework for ending the conflict in Gaza, including the disarmament of Hamas and changes to Israel’s military presence in the territory.
Berlin has previously supported diplomatic efforts aimed at establishing a sustainable political settlement while stressing the importance of Israel’s security and humanitarian assistance for civilians in Gaza.
