At least 111 people have been killed after a powerful earthquake struck western Colombia, while others are reportedly still trapped inside collapsed buildings.
The 7.4-magnitude earthquake caused widespread damage, with numerous buildings collapsing and rescue teams continuing efforts to locate and rescue people trapped beneath the rubble.
Dozens of buildings have reportedly collapsed in Cali and other areas. The city’s mayor, Alejandro Eder, confirmed that people may still be trapped inside some of the damaged structures, according to Reuters.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake’s epicenter was located near San José del Palmar in the Chocó region. The powerful tremors were felt across a wide area, including the cities of Cali and Medellín.
Authorities have also reported injuries and severe damage to buildings in Quibdó and Pereira, while search-and-rescue operations remain underway.
