The financial gap between the Premier League and Europe’s other top-flight leagues remains enormous.
According to figures as of August 12, newly promoted Premier League clubs have spent a combined £290.6 million during the summer transfer window.
Ipswich Town lead the spending with around £143.6 million, followed by Coventry City with £93.8 million and Hull City with £53.8 million.
By comparison, promoted clubs in Europe’s other four major leagues have spent:
- Serie A: £51.2 million
- La Liga: £30.3 million
- Bundesliga: £13.1 million
- Ligue 1: £1.5 million
Combined, promoted clubs in those four leagues have spent approximately £96.1 million.
That means the newly promoted Premier League sides have invested around £194.5 million more than promoted clubs from the other four major European leagues combined.
The figures once again highlight the extraordinary financial power of English football and the widening economic gap between the Premier League and the rest of Europe’s elite competitions.
