Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has continued to defend his idea of diverting the course of the Iber River, despite negative reactions from Kosovo and Europe.
This time, Vučić has brought Novi Pazar into his argument, claiming that the municipality and several organizations from the city had previously requested such an intervention as part of a project to build a small hydropower plant near Ribariće.
During a visit to southeastern Serbia, Vučić said that preliminary documentation had already existed for the project and announced that an expert group would be formed next week to work on the proposal.
“Once, this was requested by the Municipality of Novi Pazar and several organizations from that city,” Vučić claimed, responding to criticism over his announcement about changing the course of the Iber River.
He did not provide concrete details on how the project would be carried out, but insisted that, in his view, opposition to the idea stems from the assumption that Serbia intends to act against someone.
Meanwhile, Vučić’s remarks about diverting the Iber River have triggered strong reactions, as the river also flows through Kosovo and is of major importance for the country’s water supply and water resources.
Regarding the Iber River, the Serbian president said the expert group is expected to begin work next week.
