A 29-year-old mother and her nine-year-old son were killed in a Russian drone attack in Ukraine’s border region of Sumy. The strike destroyed a private home, while four other people were injured, including the child’s father and grandmother.
Local military administration chief Oleh Khryhorov said two drones set the house on fire and destroyed it, killing the mother and her son. The four injured victims were taken to hospital with severe burns.
Meanwhile, five people were injured in another Russian drone attack in the central Ukrainian city of Smila, according to the Cherkasy regional prosecutor’s office. Authorities described the incident as a large-scale attack targeting civilian infrastructure.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for increased pressure on companies supplying Russia with foreign-made components. He said Russia is using around 220 glide bombs every day against communities along the front line, despite international sanctions.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defense issued a chilling threat on Telegram, writing beneath a photo of drones in flight: “You will freeze this winter.”
Ukraine’s military responded with a photo showing smoke rising above an oil facility in Russia, stating: “We will warm ourselves with the fire of Russian refineries.”
Last winter, Moscow launched massive attacks against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, leaving millions without electricity, water and heating as temperatures fell below freezing.
