Acting President Albulena Haxhiu has invited the leaders of political parties, or their representatives, to a joint meeting on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. at the Presidency.
According to the invitation sent by Haxhiu to the political parties, the meeting has been called to discuss “current political and institutional developments and the importance of reaching an agreement on a consensual President, and consequently on the formation of other constitutional institutions.”
Haxhiu, who is currently serving as acting head of state, was also referenced today by acting Prime Minister and leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Albin Kurti, who felt the need to emphasize that she is “not enjoying” the position.
Kurti said Haxhiu is “very committed and interested” in electing a new president, seemingly signaling that she wants to step aside from the role.
“We also have the Acting President, Albulena Haxhiu, who is very committed and interested in bringing this to an end. Albulena is not someone who is enjoying being Acting President. She is very interested in having this position taken over by a unifying figure, one that we can all agree on together,” he said.
Kurti also said today that he intends to discuss potential candidates with the other parties, although his invitations have received limited responses, with the exception of Lumir Abdixhiku, who yesterday also announced that the LDK would remain in opposition. Kurti welcomed Abdixhiku’s willingness to discuss the possibility of a consensual president.
“We need to meet and genuinely discuss the characteristics of the presidential figure, but, frankly, we also need to start talking about names because we are losing too much time. And what we are losing most of all is time by heading toward elections,” Kurti said.
However, despite repeated questions from journalists, he did not name any potential candidates.
“Now spare me from having to give you the names, because, as you know, the moment I mention a name, it gets stamped with my endorsement, while these are distinguished figures in our society and among our people. I am asking that we sit down as soon as possible with Bedri Hamza, Lumir Abdixhiku and Ardian Gjini,” he said.
