Yesterday, U.S. Congressmen Greg Murphy and Marc Veasey, members of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, visited the Srebrenica–Potočari Memorial Center.
Together with the Memorial Center’s director, they visited the complex and laid a wreath in honor of the victims of the Srebrenica genocide.
“Remembering Srebrenica requires protecting the truth. Ratko Mladić died as a convicted war criminal, responsible for the Srebrenica genocide, as well as crimes against humanity and war crimes. His funeral today is not an opportunity to glorify him,” Dr. Murphy and Veasey said.
They added that genocide denial and the glorification of convicted war criminals are not only morally wrong, but also deepen ethnic divisions, intimidate survivors, and threaten the stability and democratic future of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider region.
“We call on the U.S. administration to fully implement existing U.S. sanctions mechanisms, including reinstating or imposing targeted sanctions on individuals whose actions threaten the peace and stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina or undermine the Dayton framework, in accordance with the Western Balkans Democracy and Prosperity Act,” they said.
