The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, spoke about yesterday’s funeral of Hague prisoner Ratko Mladić in Belgrade.
“The pictures from Ratko Mladić’s funeral yesterday in Belgrade were shocking. Ratko Mladić was a convicted war criminal. He was responsible for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. He died while serving a life sentence for the genocide in Srebrenica and other crimes,” Ursula von der Leyen announced on the social network X.
She wrote on X that the images demonstrate a failure to confront “a dark chapter in recent European history” and contradict the values that underpin Serbia’s path toward the European Union.
Ratko Mladić died at a detention hospital in The Hague on August 27, after the Hague Mechanism repeatedly rejected requests for him to be released so that he could receive treatment in Serbia.
He was buried on Monday at Topčider Cemetery in Belgrade.
