The constitutive session of Kosovo’s Assembly, which began on August 8, 2026, has been suspended for another day after Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) lawmakers walked out of the chamber in protest over the failed vote on their nominee for deputy speaker.
The Assembly had elected Ardian Gola of Vetëvendosje as deputy speaker with 101 votes in favor.
The subsequent vote on PDK nominee Vlora Çitaku ended with 44 votes in favor, 56 abstentions and one vote against, meaning she did not secure the required majority.
Following the result, PDK was invited to propose another candidate. PDK lawmakers instead left the chamber in protest.
Assembly Speaker Albulena Haxhiu called on the PDK MPs to return, reminding them that the same candidate can be put to a vote up to three times.
However, with PDK absent from the chamber, the Assembly could not continue the process under the circumstances, and the constitutive session was suspended until another day.
The interruption prolongs the institutional deadlock that has continued since the session was first opened on August 8, with parliamentary parties still divided over the election of the Assembly’s deputy speakers.
