The United States have continued their dominance in international women’s basketball, winning the World Cup for the fifth consecutive time.
The Americans defeated France 97–79 in Sunday’s final in Berlin, Germany, securing the gold medal after a remarkable second-half comeback.
France started the game strongly and built a 14-point lead, putting the United States under serious pressure. However, the Americans responded emphatically after halftime, completely turning the game around and securing a convincing victory.
The final marked another major championship showdown between the USA and France. The two teams also met in the 2024 Paris Olympic final, when the Americans narrowly prevailed 67–66.
Breanna Stewart was the standout performer for the United States, recording 22 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, along with four assists.
Stewart claimed the fourth World Cup title of her career and was named the tournament’s MVP, earning the award for the second time in the competition.
US head coach Kara Lawson praised her players after the victory.
“I’m really proud of our players. They got the job done. In the biggest moments, they continue to play at their best.”
Stewart said the achievement was the result of the efforts of a special group of players.
“I’ve been fortunate to play with so many incredible players, and this group was truly special. The way we were tested, both on and off the court, and the way we continued to face everything makes me incredibly proud of them.”
“We are the standard. We always have been. And we continue to be that, especially with this gold medal. We can’t forget that. It’s always about us,” Stewart added.
