Court proceedings have begun against Nadica Cepkenović, a former Serbian prison guard accused of committing war crimes during the Kosovo War.
The case is being heard at the Basic Court in Pristina, with Cepkenović facing charges related to her time as a guard at the Pristina Prison’s women’s facility in Lipjan.
According to the indictment filed by Kosovo’s Special Prosecution, during 1998–1999, Cepkenović allegedly acted together with other female guards in the systematic mistreatment and torture of Albanian women held in detention.
Prosecutors allege that the detainees were beaten with various objects, including rubber batons, as well as kicked and punched, causing physical injuries.
The indictment also describes serious physical and psychological consequences that the victims allegedly suffered as a result of the abuse.
The indictment against Cepkenović was filed on January 16, 2026, by the Special Prosecution of the Republic of Kosovo.
She is charged with the criminal offense of “Crimes Against the Civilian Population,” under Article 142 in conjunction with Article 22 of the Criminal Code of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
