France has reaffirmed its support for the Kosovo Specialist Chambers and for Kosovo’s independence and institutions following the first-instance convictions of former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) leaders Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi.
In a statement following the verdict in the “Thaçi et al.” case, France said it had taken note of the decision by the Kosovo Specialist Chambers, emphasizing that the ruling can be appealed.
France noted that the verdict marks the conclusion of the first-instance trials before the Specialist Chambers, with the exception of proceedings concerning offenses against the administration of justice.
“France reiterates its support for the Kosovo Specialist Chambers and reaffirms its commitment to the fight against impunity,” the statement said.
Paris also reaffirmed its “unwavering support” for Kosovo’s independence and its institutions.
The four former KLA leaders were convicted at first instance of several war crimes by the Specialist Chambers in The Hague and received prison sentences. The verdicts remain subject to appeal.
France’s statement comes as the verdicts continue to prompt reactions across Kosovo and internationally, with supporters and critics of the proceedings expressing differing views on the ruling and its broader significance.
