Two US companies have submitted bids to design and build a large-scale battery energy storage system in Kosovo, Economy Minister Artane Rizvanolli announced on Thursday.

According to Rizvanolli, the evaluation of the bids will now begin, with construction expected to start next year.

The planned battery storage system will have a capacity of 340 MWh and will be located in Istog and Ferizaj.

“We are getting closer to realizing one of the largest investments in the energy sector in recent decades,” Rizvanolli said.

The project is part of Kosovo’s $236.7 million Compact Program, which is co-financed by the United States through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the Government of Kosovo.

Rizvanolli said the investment would contribute to strengthening Kosovo’s energy security and thanked the US partners, MCC and the Millennium Challenge Account Kosovo (MCA-Kosovo) team for their work on the project.

“Two US companies have submitted bids for the design and construction of the batteries. The evaluation process now follows, with the aim of starting construction next year,” Rizvanolli said.

She added that the 340 MWh system planned for Istog and Ferizaj represents a major step toward strengthening Kosovo’s energy infrastructure.

The battery storage project is among the major components of the Compact Program, which aims to support Kosovo’s energy sector and improve the country’s energy security.
