A delegation from the NATO Parliamentary Assembly met with Kosovo Assembly Speaker Albulena Haxhiu on Wednesday to discuss parliamentary cooperation, security developments in Kosovo and the region, and the country’s efforts to advance toward Euro-Atlantic integration.

The delegation, visiting Kosovo on October 28–29, is led by Alberto Losacco, Vice President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, and Sverre Myrli, Chair of its Political Committee.

Kosovo Assembly Deputy Speaker Ardian Gola and MPs Shqipe Mehmeti-Selimi and Besa Kabashi-Ramaj, both members of Kosovo’s delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, also attended the meeting.

According to a statement from the Kosovo Assembly, Haxhiu emphasized NATO’s importance to the people of Kosovo, recalling the Alliance’s 1999 intervention, which she described as decisive in ending the war, massacres and ethnic cleansing carried out by the then-Serbian regime.

She expressed Kosovo’s gratitude for NATO’s intervention and continued support, stressing that the country aims to demonstrate its readiness to assume greater responsibilities in contributing to peace and collective security.

Banjska attack and regional security

The discussions addressed Kosovo’s political and security situation, including the 2023 attack in Banjska and the need to bring those responsible to justice.

The delegation also discussed broader security developments in Europe, particularly Russia’s war against Ukraine. Haxhiu reaffirmed Kosovo’s support for the Ukrainian people.

Disinformation and hybrid threats were also on the agenda, with both sides discussing the importance of cooperation to protect democratic institutions, public trust and regional stability.

Parliamentary cooperation and critical infrastructure

The meeting explored ways to deepen cooperation through regular contacts between parliamentary committees, exchanges of experience and stronger parliamentary oversight of the defense sector.

The security of critical infrastructure was another key topic.

Haxhiu reiterated Kosovo’s commitment to advancing toward NATO’s Partnership for Peace program and eventual NATO membership, highlighting the importance of domestic reforms and support from allied countries.

Kosovo’s Assembly has held associate member status in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly since 2024.

During their visit, the delegation also met with representatives of non-majority communities in Kosovo’s Assembly.
