Polish President Karol Nawrocki has declared two days of national mourning following a shooting attack in the city of Kraków, which left six people dead and many others injured.

The decision was announced by the president’s spokesperson, who confirmed that Nawrocki had signed a decree declaring national mourning across Poland on November 8 and 9.

According to reports, the attacker, who is suspected of being inspired by far-right ideology, opened fire on members of the public in the centre of Kraków, the country’s second-largest city. A British national is reportedly among the victims.

Police stated that the gunman arrived by car at the Main Market Square on Saturday afternoon and fired randomly at people in the area.

The national mourning period began at midnight, with Polish flags at public institutions lowered to half-mast.

As a mark of respect for the victims, institutions and media outlets across the country have adjusted their appearances. Websites have added black ribbons to their logos, while television and radio stations have modified their programming.

Several recreational activities and entertainment events have also been cancelled as a sign of mourning for the victims of the attack.
