UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has assessed that the situation in northern Kosovo is tense, with a risk of escalation.
In his regular report, which will be discussed at the UN Security Council on October 30, he stated that “unilateral” actions, such as the closure of institutions funded by Belgrade, restrictions on the movement of goods, and the announcement of the opening of the bridge over the Ibar, are increasing tensions.
“The atmosphere in northern Kosovo is still tense, with the possibility of escalation still present. I urge all parties to reaffirm their commitment to dialogue mediated by the European Union and to fully implement existing agreements,” Guterres said in his regular six-month report on the situation in Kosovo.
He warned that these moves “raise tensions and diminish trust among communities, undermining communities and institutions.”
“It is essential that the actions of political leaders align with the needs and rights of all communities,” Guterres added.
He also mentioned that “the serious security incident in Banjska on September 23 last year is an indication of the need for all parties to cooperate in seeking justice and that clarifying such incidents is crucial for restoring trust.”
