German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has strongly criticized Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, for his controversial remarks and open support for the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD). Musk, who owns the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), recently targeted European leaders in a series of posts, labeling Scholz a “clueless idiot” and Germany’s president a “tyrant against democracy.”, reports RFE.
In response to Musk’s remarks, Scholz told Stern magazine over the weekend that such comments are out of touch with Germany’s democratic values. He underscored the importance of maintaining calm and focus, especially as the country prepares for early parliamentary elections scheduled for February 23.
“Here in Germany, decisions are made according to the will of our citizens, not based on the confusing comments of an American billionaire,” Scholz stated firmly.
He also defended Germany’s president and political system, adding, “The German president is not a tyrant against democracy. Germany is a strong and stable democracy, regardless of what Musk might say.”
Musk has become increasingly vocal in recent months, using his platform to criticize European leaders and policies, particularly those related to migration and climate change. His comments have sparked debates about the role of influential billionaires in shaping political discourse globally.
Musk’s endorsement of the AfD, a party known for its anti-immigration and Eurosceptic stance, has raised eyebrows both in Germany and internationally. Political analysts argue that such public support could embolden extremist narratives during a sensitive electoral period. Scholz’s response is seen as an effort to reassure voters about the strength and stability of Germany’s democratic institutions.
As Germany approaches a critical election period, Scholz’s rebuke of Musk highlights the nation’s commitment to democratic principles while pushing back against external influence in domestic politics.
