On February 23, 1848, the first-ever Albanian newspaper, L’albanese d’Italia (The Albanian of Italy), was published. Founded by the renowned Albanian nationalist and writer Jeronim De Rada, the newspaper played a crucial role in advocating for Albanian rights and raising awareness of the country’s history among Italian and European audiences.
The National Historical Museum of Albania commemorated this milestone, emphasizing the role of the Albanian press during the National Awakening period. Arbëresh journalism emerged as a necessity to preserve the cultural and national identity of the Albanian diaspora in Italy, which dates back to the 15th century, following the death of Skanderbeg.
L’albanese d’Italia remains a cornerstone in the history of Albanian-language media, reflecting the struggle and resilience of Albanians in maintaining their identity abroad.
