Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Russian troops engaged in counteroffensive operations in the Kursk region on Wednesday, according to Russian state media reports. This marks his first visit to the western region since Ukraine took control of part of it.
“I am counting on the fact that all military objectives faced by our units will be achieved, and the Kursk region will soon be completely liberated from the enemy,” Putin said during his visit.
According to the state news agency Tass, the Russian president met with the head of the Russian military staff, Valery Gerasimov, at a command post, where he was briefed on the situation at the front.
Gerasimov reported to Putin that a significant number of Ukrainian soldiers had been captured during the fighting. “The Ukrainian army, seeing that resistance is futile, has started to surrender. So far, 430 fighters have been captured,” Gerasimov said in the meeting with Putin.
Meanwhile, the Kursk region remains a hotspot of intense clashes between Russian and Ukrainian forces, as negotiations continue for a potential ceasefire.
