Avdullah Hoti, a Member of Parliament from the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), has reacted to reports of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) being phased out under reforms from the U.S. Trump Administration.
“Kosovo is among the countries that will suffer the most from the closure of the MCC,” Hoti stated.
He emphasized that the rejection of the Washington Agreement signed on September 4, 2020, blocked the opportunity to build a natural gas power plant.
“Now, with MCC shutting down, Kosovo will also lose the $220 million grant earmarked for purchasing energy storage batteries,” Hoti warned.
“Many interconnected projects aimed at improving citizens’ well-being will also be lost.“
Hoti criticized the current government for ignoring strategic partnerships:
“This is what happens when the country is governed by the unqualified,” he said.
“By ignoring the Washington Agreement, they rejected a partnership with the United States — the main guarantor of Kosovo’s freedom and independence.“
He further noted:
“This government also refused to suspend import tariffs on U.S. goods. It is clearly working against Kosovo’s strategic interests.“
The MCC program, which was expected to enhance Kosovo’s energy capacity and infrastructure, now faces complete shutdown, raising concerns about economic and development setbacks.
