Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has confirmed that Russia will proceed with the proposed three-day ceasefire announced by President Vladimir Putin, despite strong opposition from Ukraine.
Peskov stated that, regardless of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s rejection, Russia will observe a temporary halt to hostilities from May 8 to May 11, in honor of the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in World War II.
“President Putin’s initiative for a temporary ceasefire during the holidays is appropriate, and the relevant orders have been issued by the supreme commander-in-chief Putin,” Peskov declared.
According to him, Russia will cease fire, but remains prepared to respond if Ukraine does not respect the decision.
“The fire will be stopped, but if the Kyiv regime fails to act accordingly and continues attacking our positions and bases, an immediate and appropriate response will follow,” Peskov added.
On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called Russia’s proposal a “theatrical performance,” implying that it is a political move rather than a sincere gesture from the Kremlin.
