The Office of the President of Kosovo has issued a strong reaction following Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić’s visit to Moscow, despite calls from European leaders to boycott Russia’s Victory Day celebrations due to its war against Ukraine.
President Vjosa Osmani’s advisor, Bekim Kupina, stated for KosovaPress that Vučić’s attendance at the May 9 parade in Moscow is a direct signal of Serbia’s ideological alignment with Putin’s autocratic regime.
“Vučić’s visit confirms not only his ideological proximity to an autocratic and aggressive regime like Putin’s, but also Serbia’s orientation against Euro-Atlantic values and principles,” said Kupina.
Vučić traveled to Russia via Baku, Azerbaijan, as Lithuania had closed its airspace to flights associated with Russia. His participation comes amid intensified warnings from the European Union, which had urged both member and candidate countries to boycott the Moscow event in protest of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.
Kupina emphasized that Vučić’s presence in Moscow, as a former minister under Slobodan Milošević, should serve as a wake-up call to Western leaders who continue to support Vučić unconditionally:
“His role in Moscow, fully serving Putin’s agenda, is a product of the Western appeasement policies that have long turned a blind eye to his destabilizing actions, reminiscent of the 1990s,” Kupina added.
Vučić had recently attempted to meet former U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida, but was denied access to the premises by Trump’s chief of staff. He later claimed to have fallen ill and was hospitalized in a military hospital in Belgrade, where doctors declared his condition stable.
Meanwhile, Serbia remains one of the only countries in Europe, along with Belarus, not to impose sanctions on Russia following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine — further isolating Belgrade from the European consensus.
