On May 15, 2025, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz pledged before the Bundestag to create the strongest conventional army in Europe. This commitment is a direct response to the growing threats from a hostile Russia and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Merz emphasized that this move is fitting for one of Europe’s most populous and economically powerful countries. He noted that Germany’s friends and partners expect—and practically demand—such action.

In his first parliamentary speech since the new government formation last week, Merz vowed to use all available financial resources to strengthen the country’s military.

His vision is for Germany and Europe to become so strong that the use of weapons becomes unnecessary. To achieve this, Germany must take on greater responsibilities within NATO and the European Union.
