The Association of Journalists of Kosovo (AJK) has welcomed the decision by the Supreme Court of Kosovo to annul the changes to the Regulation of the Independent Media Commission (IMC). These changes had enabled the unlawful election of the institution’s chairperson.
“The AJK welcomes the Supreme Court’s decision to annul the change to the IMC Regulation. The Association of Journalists of Kosovo has welcomed the notification from the Supreme Court of Kosovo which approved the administrative lawsuit filed by the Kosovo Institute for Justice (KJI) against the Independent Media Commission,” stated the AJK’s reaction.
The KJI’s lawsuit, supported by other civil society organizations, was submitted after the amendment of the IMC’s internal regulation, which resulted in the dismissal of Jeton Mehmeti from the position of chairperson and the appointment of Besnik Berisha in his place.
The Supreme Court’s decision states that “the regulation was approved contrary to the principles of the rule of law, transparency, and public participation.”
The AJK had opposed the regulation change from the outset, considering it unlawful, as well as the election of Mr. Berisha to head the IMC.
“The AJK is committed to ensuring that this constitutional body for the regulation of audiovisual media functions completely independently from politics,” the reaction further stated.
