President Donald Trump declared today that he believes Iran was “only weeks away” from developing a nuclear weapon, describing the scenario as potentially catastrophic, CNN reports.
“I’ve been saying for 20 years—maybe even longer—that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. I’ve said it for a long time, and I think they were just a few weeks away from having one,” Trump stated.
“Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. It’s too destructive. And they would use it,” he added.
“You know, I believe they would use it. Others wouldn’t, but I believe they would. So that’s it. It’s very simple.”
These remarks come as the U.S. administration sends mixed signals about the intelligence it holds regarding Iran’s nuclear progress.
