European Union Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, stated that the EU is awaiting the formation of Kosovo’s new government “to focus with full energy on the accession process.”
Speaking about the EU’s Growth Plan for the Western Balkan countries—a package including approximately 6 billion euros in grants and a portion as loans—Kos emphasized that the next steps now lie with the Balkan states themselves. Kosovo is expected to receive around 900 million euros from this package. However, the process in Kosovo has been stalled due to the ongoing failure to constitute its Assembly.
Kos added that EU member states currently have a consensus on enlargement. “There is a consensus for enlargement now. But the window of opportunity might not always be there. We are seeing progress,” she said, highlighting Albania’s advancement with the opening of negotiations in recent months.
