President Gitanas Nausėda confirmed Paluckas’s resignation this morning, responding to growing public protests that demanded the Prime Minister’s departure.

Background on the Scandal

In July, Lithuanian media published an investigation into Paluckas’s past business activities and an unpaid €16,500 fine linked to a 2012 corruption case. Back then, Paluckas was found guilty of abusing his position while managing a rodent control contract in Vilnius.

Details of the Resignation

Facing mounting pressure and possible impeachment, the Social Democratic Party leader resigned before the opposition could act. His entire cabinet is expected to step down, leaving Lithuania without an effective government just weeks before planned Russian-Belarusian military drills.

Impact on Lithuanian Politics

While a reshuffle is unlikely to shift Lithuania’s foreign policy, new coalition talks are expected soon to form a replacement government.

Paluckas denies wrongdoing, calling the accusations a “coordinated attack” by rivals.
