The Basic Court in Prishtina, Special Department, has approved the request from the Special Prosecutor’s Office of Kosovo to place Siniša Spasić in pretrial detention for one month, citing strong suspicion that he committed war crimes against civilians during the Kosovo War.

During the hearing, the pretrial judge determined that the legal conditions for detention were met due to credible suspicion that Spasić, together with other uniformed members of Serbian police and army forces, engaged in organized attacks on civilians in the village of Reznik, Vushtrri, on April 6, 1999.

According to the court:

  • The accused and accomplices looted and burned homes, killing unarmed civilians including I.U., M.U. and their spouses, B.U., F.U., S.U., F.U., and T.U. with his spouse H.U.
  • Following the looting, one victim, B., was taken to the second floor of a house, where she was beaten, abused, and sexually assaulted, sustaining serious bodily injuries.

The court emphasized that the severity and complexity of the alleged crimes necessitate pretrial detention, noting that other measures would be insufficient to ensure the proper progress of legal proceedings.

Additionally, the court highlighted the risk of flight, as Spasić is a Serbian national, and could evade justice if released.
