Professor at Johns Hopkins University, Daniel Serwer, has stated that Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić no longer enjoys the Western support he once had.

“He has clearly turned towards Moscow and Beijing,” Serwer told Radio Free Europe.

Regarding the months-long protests against Vučić’s government, Serwer emphasized that the Serbian president has no one to blame but himself.

“Vučić has no one to blame but himself,” he said.

Commenting on the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ statement about the protests in Serbia, Serwer added that Moscow will pressure Vučić to suppress the demonstrations.

“With Vučić and the Russians, there is always the risk of escalation or distraction through another destabilizing incident in Kosovo,” he said when asked whether there is a risk of spillover and impact on regional stability.

Serwer views the protests in Serbia as “a genuine sign of popular dissatisfaction with the government’s performance,” but notes that the demonstrators do not appear to have created a clear political alternative.
