Russian fighter jets have violated Estonian airspace, officials have confirmed.
In a statement, the Estonian government said the incident involved three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets, which flew over the country for a total of 12 minutes without permission. The Defense Minister described the incident as “extremely brutal,” Sky News reports, via Sinjali.
Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated that Russia has already violated Estonian airspace four times this year, “which is unacceptable in itself, but today’s violation, during which three fighter jets entered our airspace, is extraordinarily bold.”
“The increasingly frequent testing of borders by Russia and its aggression must be met with a swift strengthening of political and economic pressure,” he added.
Estonia is the third NATO country to report an airspace violation by Russia in recent weeks: on Sunday, Romania said a drone entered its airspace during a Russian strike against neighboring Ukraine.
Poland also reported last week an “unprecedented violation” of its airspace by Russia.
