U.S. President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi spoke briefly to the press after Trump arrived in Sharm El Sheikh for a peace summit attended by dozens of world leaders.
“It is a great pleasure and a great honor to have you here in the city of peace,” Sisi told Trump before reporters.
The Egyptian leader went on to offer rare and emphatic praise for the U.S. president:
“I have been deeply convinced that Your Excellency is the only one capable of bringing this and ending this war. I said it very clearly during our communications — you are the only one who can bring peace.”
Sisi emphasized that leaders must now ensure that the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is respected, that the bodies of the remaining hostages in Gaza are returned to their families, and that humanitarian aid flows freely into the Gaza Strip.
He added that the next steps of the ceasefire plan must be worked out “very closely.”
“Egypt looks forward to your support and sponsorship in the conference for Gaza’s reconstruction,” Sisi concluded.
