U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he has instructed the Department of Defense to prepare for a potential military intervention in Nigeria, accusing the country of failing to stop violence against Christians — an allegation that Nigeria has repeatedly denied.

In a social media post, Trump condemned what he described as the “massacre of Christians” in Nigeria. He stated that the United States will immediately halt all aid and assistance to the West African nation unless its government acts swiftly to curb the violence.

In his lengthy message, Trump added that the U.S. “may very well enter that already disgraced country, with weapons in hand and opening fire, to completely destroy the Islamic terrorists committing these horrible atrocities,” according to a report from CNN.

The Nigerian government has not yet issued an official response to Trump’s remarks, but previous statements have rejected similar claims as “misleading and inflammatory.”
