The United Kingdom is sending experts and equipment to Belgium to assist in countering drones that have temporarily shut down airports.
Drones have been spotted over airports and military bases in Belgium over the past week, causing major disruptions across Europe in recent months.
Richard Knighton, head of the UK armed forces, told the BBC that his Belgian counterpart requested help, and British personnel and equipment are en route.
“Last week, the Defence Secretary and I agreed to deploy our people and equipment to Belgium to assist them,” Knighton said.
While the source of the drones remains unknown, Knighton noted that Russia has been involved in “hybrid warfare” patterns in recent years. Russia has denied any connection to the incidents.
The first drone sightings over airports serving Brussels and Liège forced the diversion of incoming flights and the grounding of some departing planes on Tuesday.
