German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has urged Beijing to use its influence over Moscow during ongoing ceasefire consultations for the war in Ukraine, ahead of his first official visit to China.
“No other country has as much influence on Russia as China does to ensure that Moscow agrees to serious negotiations respecting Ukraine’s sovereignty,” Wadephul said in Berlin.
He added that it is in Germany’s interest for China to contribute to a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine.
Western governments have repeatedly accused China of indirectly supporting Russia’s war efforts, while Beijing continues to insist that it has maintained a neutral position.
Wadephul emphasized that engagement with China is essential during a period of heightened international tensions, noting that freedom, security, and prosperity are closely tied to relations with Beijing.
During his visit, Wadephul is expected to address China’s restrictions on the export of rare metals, materials that are vital for key sectors of the German economy.
The German Foreign Minister will meet with Vice President Han Zheng, and will hold discussions with Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Commerce Minister Wang Wentao. He will also meet Liu Haixing, head of the Communist Party’s international department.
His agenda will further include talks on the Middle East situation, as well as growing concerns over the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait.
